WFTU GS Letter to COSATU SNC Delegates

14 July 2015

To: COSATU SNC DELEGATES

Dear comrades,

With these words, I convey to you my best wishes for your Special National Congress. I am certain that it will be a successful, democratic and fruitful Congress in accordance with the heroic and militant heritage of workers struggles you are carrying on your shoulders.

In a world of intensified imperialist aggressiveness, strong and brutal competition for the natural resources, the raw materials, the markets and the transportation roads; In a world where all the gains of the trade union struggle of the previous decades are at stake as all labour and social rights are under attack in favor of the profiting of the capitalists; In a world where workers and their trade union leaders are imprisoned for their struggles; we need strong class-oriented militant trade unions who believe and implement in praxis the international proletarian solidarity, we need a strong militant and class oriented COSATU.

Once more, I reaffirm the support and solidarity of the World Federation of Trade Unions celebrating this year its 70th years of militant and internationalist struggle and the 92 million workers it represents in 126 countries to the working class and the people of South Africa. In this direction, South Africa has been chosen by the WFTU Presidential Council to host the 17th World Trade Union Congress, the highest summit of the international class-oriented trade union movement, in October 2016, with respect to the proposal of the WFTU affiliates in the country.

We are looking forward for the outcomes of your SNC for the betterment of the working class in South Africa, in Africa and internationally.

Long live international solidarity!

Long live COSATU!

Long live WFTU!

Comradely greetings,

George Mavrikos,
GENERAL SECRETARY
