COSATU North West press statement on Lehurutshe (Zeerust) Hospital

06 - 11 - 06

COSATU North West condemns the attitude of the North West Government over the non-delivery of basic services to rural communities, such as providing water to Lehurutshe hospital. Not to provide water to rural communities, after twelve years of democracy, i s a fundamental strategic mistake.

COSATUs view is that water is a basic need for communities, including all Government Institutions such as hospitals, which deal with the lives of our communities on a daily basis. There is therefore no need for the North West Government to postpone the se rvice delivery of water, in particular to a hospital.

The people of North West voted in the Local Government elections purposely for the delivery of basic needs such as water, electricity and housing, as per the ANC Manifesto. It is therefore uncalled for to continue postponing the delivery of water to hospit als.

The inconsistent government response to the issues of service delivery to rural communities, in particular to hospitals, presents fundamental political challenges to government.

COSATU calls upon the Premier of North West, the MEC for Local Government and the councillors to make sure that people get what is due to them as per Government Policy; this is not a favour.

COSATU shares the concern of the people of Lehurutshe and agrees that honouring the promises made by councillors to deliver water and other basic needs is overdue and therefore calls on the Premier to act with immediate effect.
