For 28 years COSATU and its affiliated unions have been improving the lives of workers in South Africa. There is clear evidence worldwide that workers who are union members receive higher wages and work in better conditions than those who are not.

And we are determined to do more. We have just launched a campaign for a national minimum wage and comprehensive sectoral bargaining to improve on that minimum wage floor. We are fighting to ban the human traffickers called labour brokers. We fight against unfair dismissal, discrimination and dangerous or unhealthy working conditions.

As well as the issues at the workplace we are campaigning on issues which affect workers’ lives away from work, calling for comprehensive social protection, a national health insurance scheme, free, high-quality education and efficient, safe and affordable public transport, and we are opposing e-tolls.
