Worker's death at Sasol

23 June 2005

Once more, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is saddened and shocked by the death of a contract-worker in the Sasol Synfuels Sulphur Plant in Secunda, Mpumalanga, yesterday. We send our condolences to his family and friends.

The death of workers in Sasol plants is becoming an all too common event, despite the many calls COSATU has made for the upgrading of health, safety and security measures in these plants.

We are calling upon the Department of Labour not only to investigate the circumstances under which our poor workers and members die on a daily basis, but to table in Parliament an amendment to the Health and Safety Acts. They must make not only the neglige nt companies concerned pecuniarily liable, but also the individuals who neglect their duties of ensuring the safety and healthy environment of workers, criminally liable for their dereliction of duty.

COSATU will not rest until such an amendment is made law. Enough is enough!

For further information please contact Norman Mokoena, COSATU Mpumalanga Provincial Secretary, on 013 656 0289 or 084 711 0764.
