COSATU congratulates new Deputy President

22 June 2005

The Congress of South African Trade Unions congratulates the newly appointed Deputy President, comrade Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka. We also congratulate her replacement at the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, comrade Lindiwe Hendricks as well as the two Deputy Ministers in the Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Thabethe and Rob Davies.

Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka is one of the ANC leaders whose working style has earned herself many admirers and friends in COSATU. She is absolutely humble, consultative and only interested in the best interests of our country. She has a soft spot for workers an d has done everything to take them on board in the difficult process of transforming the minerals and energy industry. She is highly respected by all the role players, in particular workers and trade unions. For this reason Mlambo Ngcuka is the holder of t he highest award of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), who gave her the Kgau ya bahale, or the crown of the warriors.

We hope that Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka will take forward this consultative style into the Presidency. We wish her well as Deputy President of South Africa and send best wishes for a successful term of office. COSATU will give her every support, just as it use d to support former Deputy President Jacob Zuma.

We take pride in the appointment of Elizabeth Thabethe, a trade union stalwart and long-time COSATU gender activist. She was one of the COSATU leaders deployed into parliament in 1994 from our union now called CEPPWAWU and formerly CWIU. We also congratula te Rob Davies and trust that the trio, which includes Mandisi Mphahlwa, will make a huge difference to one of the most critical portfolios in the cabinet.
