COSATU Western Cape press statement - Opposing forced removals at Joe Slovo
Joe Slovo Mass Meeting at City Hall, 12h30-14h30, Monday 10 December 2007
COSATU has held a mass meeting with the residents of Joe Slovo to pledge support against the government's attempts to evict people from the site. This principle of forced removals that the government is trying to implement is the start of a worrying trend from the democratically elected government. This reminds us of the way in which the apartheid state had conducted them.
As COSATU we believe that the concerns of the poor communities are the primary concern in dealing with these housing and basic services questions. COSATU will be supporting the Joe Slovo residents in opposing any unfair evictions and will be insisting that government provides adequate facilities for communities close to the areas of opportunities for jobs and services.
It has come to our attention that the government intends removing the Joe Slovo people during the festive season, whilst the prospect for solidarity action is limited. The meeting will be attended by the community from Hout Bay who themselves were able to overcome threats of forced removals from government.
There will be a press briefing at 14 00 at the city hall by the leadership of the organisations opposing the forced removals.
