COSATU Free State concerned by the reduced number of trucks delivering water in Qwaqwa

COSATU Free State has noted with serious concern the reduced number of trucks that are delivering water to the areas ,which are hard hit by water shortages. As workers and members of the community ,we have noted the reduced frequency of the trucks ,which continue to travel to the villages to deliver water to the most needy.

We have also been made aware that there are other villages where a truck only comes once a week or once in two weeks to deliver water to the community members. We condemn with the strongest terms possible the situation ,which these communities continue to subject to on a matter which could have long been resolved.

We are not sure if Maluti A Phofung Municipality can still afford the cost of those trucks and whether the reduction of the numbers has got anything to do with the funding. We had raised this matter sometime ago that the issue of privately owned trucks would deplete the coffers of the Municipality and that the community would suffer in the process.

We had made a call that the South African National Defense Force should be deployed to deliver water at a very low cost. We would like to reiterate the call we made some time ago that the SANDF should deliver water to the areas in need and that these service of delivering water should not be driven by a profit motive as that service would be rendered with a very reasonable cost by our very capable army.

We maintain that the continued water crisis in Qwaqwa is man-made and has an affordable solution which could have been implemented a long time ago and the lives of the people could have been made a whole lot better!
