COSATU Free State demands safe, affordable and reliable public transport

COSATU Free State is deeply saddened by the accident that led to some workers losing their lives and left others injured, when a bus hit the a stationery vehicle on the N8. The bus was taking the workers, students, community members, job seekers and students to their various destinations.

We wish those who were injured a speedy recovery and hope they recuperate so that they can lead productive lives and continue to provide for their families. We dip our banners to those workers and commuters, who have lost their lives in the accident and extend a word of condolences to the families, relatives and friends.

COSATU Free State demands a full and comprehensive investigation into this incident. All those that will be found to have erred and broken the law should be brought to book. It cannot be correct that commuters and workers continue to lose their lives in instances, where such is avoidable and there are no consequences for the offenders!

We are saddened by the fact that an even bigger number of households and children have been robbed of their breadwinners. Since the majority of our workers continue to be employed in precarious employment; these accidents are compromising the livelihood of many families.

We continue to make our call to the state to provide a safe, affordable, and reliable public transport. It has been ages now since we have been awaiting the revitalization of the railway line in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. As COSATU, we will be stepping up our campaign for the provision of the safe, affordable and reliable public transport for our communities, as part of the infrastructural developments to spur economic activities and developments.
