NUM is extremely worried about its members and other workers who have staged a sit-in underground at Zululand Anthracite Colliery
12 October 2017
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) can confirm that its members and other workers have staged a sit-in underground since 10 October 2017 at Zululand Anthracite Colliery.
"The workers remain underground and are adamant that they will not come to the surface until the employer address the long service award issue. Members want the employer to accede to their demands regarding long service award," said Msawenkosi Nkabinde," NUM Branch Secretary at Zululand Anthracite Colliery.
"The employer interdicted the strike that was supposed to start on the 9th of October 2017 but workers are very angry, perceive the action of the employer as a refusal to acknowledge the services they were rendering to the mine," Nkabinde said.
The NUM is extremely worried about the health and safety of its members and other workers who are staging a sit-in underground. The mine management has refused to listen to the demands of our members.
