COSATU Free State is relieved that all workers we rescued at Sibanye Stillwater Beatrix Mine

COSATU Free State learned with relief that all the 955 workers were rescued from the shaft earlier this morning. We are still shocked that an incident of this magnitude occurred at Sibanye Stillwater Beatrix right under the nose of the Department of Mineral Resources.

We have also learned that the incident of power shortage affected not only Beatrix in the area but two shafts, however the other mine managed to hoist their workers from the shaft with the assistance of a generator. What is strange is that the generator at Beatrix was not functioning when it was required to and at a very critical moment.

Clearly Sibanye Stillwater and Department of Mineral Resources neglected their responsibilities in this regard; both of them should have ensured that the safety measures of the workers were safeguarded.

As COSATU and NUM ,we would be engaging in a campaign to enforce the safety of our members in the workplace as a priority above production and ultimately profits.
