COSATU statement on the violent assault of a woman outside Albert Luthuli House

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has noted with shock the violent assault of a woman by men outside Albert Luthuli House. COSATU is shocked by the normalisation of Gender Based Violence and the abhorrent assault of a defenceless woman in full view of the South African Police, who did nothing. The federation is more disturbed by the attitude and prejudice demonstrated by the police.

Whilst COSATU applaud the Johannesburg Region for its hasty response on this issue of abuse of authority by a leader of our beloved revolutionary movement, but there is no amount of justification to perpetrate violence against women. We believe that it is the responsibility of every person to act to stop the ongoing incidences that are hurting the most vulnerable sector of the communities ,which is the women.
