SATAWU is saddened by the death of two mineworkers
8 February 2018
South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union in solidarity with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is calling for the improvement of health and safety standards in mining operations.
On Wednesday two mineworkers died after they were trapped underground following a rock fall at Sibanye Stillwater's Kloof Ikamva Shaft in Johannesburg. Sadly, attempts to save the pair were unsuccessful. An investigation into the cause of the rock fall has been launched. SATAWU calls for the speedy finalisation of the probe so appropriate measures can be put in place to avoid a recurrence of the incident.
SATAWU echoes its sister union's sentiments that, "We sell our labour, not our lives, lungs, and limbs. One death is one death too many."
We send our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased mineworkers.
