COSATU Free State Gender Structure statement of the shooting of Comrade Sarah Motsitsi

The COSATU Free State Gender Structure is deeply concerned by the unremitting violence directed at women in this country. This past weekend saw headlines about the tragic passing of a young teacher at the hands of her ex boyfriend. Comrade Sarah Motsitsi was a grade 4 Mathematics educator at Reseamohetse Primary School in Theunissen, who was a brilliant young woman with a heart of gold, who had won the Teachers Awards in the Technology category both provincially and nationally at the Teachers National Awards.

It has also been reported that the ex boyfriend turned the gun on himself after killing Motsitsi. This is just an indication of the high rate of femicide in South Africa. We still have a long way to go as a country, especially in having to teach men to respect and value the lives of women.

Cde Sarah was meant to attend the Teachers Awards ceremony again this year after he victory last year but unfortunately the young teacher met her untimely death.

What is more troubling is to hear that the killer had just completed his training to be a police officer and was yet to report for duty when he reached the tipping point and the tragedy struck. Police violence is problem in this country and needs special attention from the relevant authorities.

We send our sincere condolences to the Motsitsi and Die family for their losses. Our prayers and hearts go out to them at this difficult time.As COSATU Free State ,we will stop at nothing to ensure that achieve gender equality in the workplaces as well as in the society. This incident has just strengthened our resolve to drive our campaigns of gender issues.
