SACTWU and NULAW demand for supsension of Footwear Factory Gun-Wielding Chargehand

12 July 2018

The Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU) and the National Union of Leather and Allied Workers (N.U.L.A.W) are demanding the immediate suspension of Mr Allie Kramer, a Chargehand (position just below a Supervisor) at Bagshaw Footwear factory in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape Province.

Our trade unions have written to the Human Resources Manager, Ms Estee Fouche, in this regard, earlier today. The reason for our demand is as follows:

Around 06h45 this morning, Mr Kramer had fired live ammunition from within the factory premises and within close range of peacefully protesting footwear workers. These workers have been on a legally protected wage strike since Monday 9 July 2018, in pursuit of their living wage demands. Close to 10 000 footwear workers nationally have now joined the strike.

We regard the actions of Mr Kramer as illegal, provocative and not conducive to the promotion of sound industrial relations. It has placed the lives of our members in serious danger. This type of disgusting conduct is not acceptable to us. We intend to lay criminal charges against Mr Kramer.

We call for his immediate suspension and for the urgent institution of disciplinary action against him.

The strike is now in its 4th day. We will not allow our striking members to be intimidated in this or any other manner, and will intensify our strike action.
