COSATU Free State worried about the possible closure of Voorspoed mine in December 2018

COSATU Free State is shocked to learn from the media reports that the De Beers Consolidated Mines has taken a decision to close Voorspoed mine in Kroonstad by December 2018.

The matter has been brought to the attention of the public, whilst the employees internally have not been briefed about the matter. The NUM as a representative trade union has not been given an opportunity to seek alternatives with management to the closure of the mine.

We find this quite unfortunate and unfair for workers to learn through the media that they will be losing their jobs come December 2018 will be gone. They have not even been given a chance to contribute towards the future of their employment.

We condemn the board for releasing a statement without proper consultation We hereby call on the company to engage the NUM on the matter to seek a lasting and amicable solution to the matter. Workers needs more than just sympathy statements from the employer but meaningful consultation on the process.
