COSATU condemns the assassination attempt against President Nicholas Maduro of Venezuela

6 August 2018

The Congress of South African Trade Unions has learned with great shock the news of the attempted assassination of the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro. This happened during his key address on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the National Bolivarian Guard which took place on Saturday, 4 August 2018.

We are relieved that the life of the President was spared and that no life was lost and wish those injured a speedy recovery.
The timing of this attack couldn't have been at a more significant moment for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, on this day they mark a very important milestone "the Founding of the National Bolivarian Guard", which is a symbol of their sovereignty. The commemoration was marked by a civic and military parade in Caracas.

The attack was carried out as President Maduro addressed the members of the National Bolivarian Guards, at least two explosions occurred in front of the Presidents podium as he addressed using aerial devices ( drones) directed to the President and high ranking officials that were with him on the podium. We condemn this act of terror whose intention is to destabilize the country and the region.

COSATU strongly condemns the attack against the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. We note there have been numerous attempts on his life and we know there will be other attempts after this one. This act of terror is another desperate attempt to force regime change in that country. We note the preliminary outcomes of the investigations carried out by the security forces of Venezuela which points the finger at the Venezuelan far right wing in collusion with the Colombian oligarchy. We also strongly believe that there is an invisible hand of the US amongst those who are responsible for this attack.

We strongly believe that the attempts are carried out to try and stop the economic recovery plan of Venezuela and the growing support for the country's independence and economic improvement. We support the direction that the country of Venezuela is exploring in building a progressive bloc. We reject and condemn unilateral economic blockade imposed against Venezuela by the US. We know too well that the imperialist powers, the US in particular will not rest until they achieve regime change in Venezuela and install their own order.

We support the determination towards economic recovery for Venezuela, their resolve to maintain their revolution and we know it will be a start towards stability, tranquillity and prosperity for all its citizens.

In his own words President Maduro warned the country not to lower its guard as the conspiracy has returned. We call on the governments of the world to speak out and wage a fight against all terrorist groups, including those based in the United States of America. This is the time for strengthened solidarity networks in defence of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in ensuring that their self determination and their own kind of democracy prevail.
