NEHAWU welcomes the resignation of Mr. Steven Zwane as NSFAS CEO

06 October 2018

The National Education, Health & Allied Workers Union [NEHAWU] welcomes the resignation Mr Steven Zwane as the National Student Financial Aid Scheme [NSFAS] Board Chief Executive Officer [CEO].

Mr Zwane resigned on the first day of his disciplinary hearing on charges related to Maladministration. His resignation was long overdue and as the national union we believe that it should have taken place long ago. We have been calling for his resignation since July 2018 because we believed that he did not deserve to occupy that position. Mr Zwane played a huge role in creating the crisis of payment delays to poor students and also ran an onslaught of undermining NSFAS workers.

As NEHAWU, we hope the next CEO will be someone of integrity and not a person who is unprincipled like Mr Zwane. The scheme renders a very significant service to students therefore it requires a reputable leader at the helm. We further believe that the scheme will go back to its moral and ethical standing, and the employment of friends and cronies cease to exist.

The national union believes that the departure of Mr Zwane will fix most of the problems that are currently engulfing the scheme. As a union organising at NSFAS we once again commit ourselves to working hard to ensure that students are assisted with access to higher education.
