COSATU Mpumalanga condemns the recent unfair dismissal of 36 employees by the Manager of Shoprite Checkers in Nelspruit Brown Street

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in Mpumalanga is shocked and disgusted by the recent irregular, illegal dismissal meted against 36 staff members employed by Shoprite checkers in Nelspruit. The federation is shocked and consider the dismissal illegal because of the following reasons;-

  • That the dismissed workers have not been formally served with dismissal letters.
  • That the dismissed workers have not been subjected to fair disciplinary processes and procedures.
  • That the employer has arrogantly and vehemently refused to accept the mediation by the CCMA through section 150 of LRA in order to find the amicable resolution of the impasse.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions will work with our affiliate SACCAWU, which is organising in the sector to ensure that justice prevails for the workers. We shall work to force the employer to adhere to the country's labour laws and push for an amicable resolution of the matter.

We further call upon members of the community reconsider their business relationship with Shoprite Nelspruit due to their intransigent and undermining of labour legislation of the country.
