GOVT ADMITS BRT CONSULTATION PROCESS WAS FLAWED

The government has acknowledged that the consultation process in the launch of the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system was flawed, The Star newspaper reported on Thursday.

"We must concede that the consultation process for the BRT might
not have been the most appropriate method, given the nature of the
industry and the variety of stakeholders," transport director
general Mpumi Mpofu said.

"It would have been more desirable to have more intense
consultation, rather than workshops," Mpofu said at Parliament`s
transport portfolio committee meeting on Wednesday.

BRT involves the construction of "bus way corridors" on
segregated lanes to provide a more reliable transport service to
commuters, but taxi bosses are opposed to the system which they
believe would take away valuable business from them.
