COSATU TO PROTEST AT FARMER`S TRIAL

Cosatu members will protest at the Madibeng Magistrate`s Court in Brits on Thursday at the trial of a farmer accused of shooting four boys for allegedly stealing oranges on his farm.

"This is racism. When farm workers are shot and are mistaken for a dog, baboon or chicken, that is what we call racism," the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) North West provincial secretary Solly Phetoe said in a statement.

"We will protest against the police station and the conduct of the chief magistrate at this court. When farm workers are put in the back of a car with dogs during working hours, in winter, that is racism."

On June 14, Dawie Swart, a farmer from Brits in North West province shot at four black boys, whom he alleged were stealing oranges at his Klipkop farm.

Phetoe called on the community in the area to join them in support of the four boys, in a province that has on several occasions been rocked by racist attacks.
