PRIVATISATION PROTEST ACTION
September 17, 1998
The COSATU Executive Committee which met yesterday was briefed on the latest development in the anti-privatisation campaign. Following the deadlock in Nedlac on the 8th September, a meeting was held between COSATU and Minister Valli Moosa on the 12th September.
At this meeting it was agreed that the ministry and SAMWU will establish a local government sectoral committee based on the NFA to discuss local government restructuring. The team will look at the objectives, principles and processes that should guide the restructuring process, including conditions under which the private sector/public partnerships may take place.
It was also agreed that the regulatory framework (which should safeguard communities, workers and the state) must be completed as soon as possible. Pending contracts in Nelspruit and the Dolphin Coast have been put on hold until this process is finalised.
COSATU has therefore decided to suspend its protest action scheduled for the end of this month, pending the outcome of the process outlined above.
