COSATU mourns passing of Arthur Chaskalson
2 December 2012
The Congress of South African Trade Unions mourns the passing of Comrade Arthur Chaskalson, the first President of the Constitutional Court, who spent his entire life in the service of the people of South Africa. We send our condolences to his family, friends and comrades.
He used his great legal skills to advance the struggle for freedom and democracy, from his role as one of the lawyers who defended Comrade Nelson Mandela during his trial in 1993/94, through his work as head of the Legal Resource Centre from 1978 to 1993, to his appointment as the first president of the Constitutional Court in 1994 and then Chief Justice until 2005.
Arthur Chaskalson will always be remembered and honoured as one of the key role-players in the construction of our world-renowned constitutional dispensation, and his leadership in the Constitutional Court, which has consistently protected and extended our democratic rights.
We owe it to his memory to make sure that we never undermine the democratic foundations he laid down, in his lifelong commitment to promote social justice and human rights.
