COSATU calls on the community of the North West to fight for their rights

12 December 2012

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the North West province is calling on all the communities of the North West to stand up and fight for their right to travel freely anywhere in the province without being over-taxed by the most expensive toll gate in the country.

COSATU has for several time wage protest action to highlight the plight of the poor who are forced to pay exorbitant toll fees at this toll gate which was erected in a road which previously existed.

Government has continue to make promises to adhere to COSATUís calls but to date nothing positive has come out and tax payers continue to be double taxed.

The only demand that the minister responded to was to establish a task team to look at the state of all our roads in the NW. As the federation we appreciated that and requested that it must involve all the stake holders of the province.

We deadlocked on Friday at the task team. We demanded that the R71 must be suspended or the payment must be reduced while the task team is still busy with its investigation. We are still awaiting the DG response for our action on 14 December 2012.

COSATU would want to reiterate its disappointment on the failure of the Minister of Transport to intervene on this matter that has a bearing on the income of the working class and the poor people of this country and also affects our neighbouring countries.

COSATU would like to take this opportunity to call on all communities who are affected by this high toll fee to come up in numbers and protest against this toll gate on the 14 December 2012 at the toll gate to highlight their anger on the over taxing imposed on them by government.

COSATU would also like to call on all the communities and the farm workers and farm dwellers to come out in numbers when it marches in demand of the end to violence and the farm killing that our farm workers are subjected to on a daily basis. This march will be on the 13th December 2012 to the Swartruggens police station.
