SAMWU PLEDGE FULL SUPPORT TO SACTWU

Issued by: Congress of South African Trade Unions

TO: The General Secretary SACTWU

From: The General Secretary SAMWU

Dear Comrade

On behalf of the entire membership of SAMWU we wish to pledge our full support to the members of SACTWU in their fight for a living wage. We have already started working closely with your Western Cape Region regarding solidarity support. Your pending strike comes at a time when the South African workers (and indeed working people in all parts of the world) are having to endure enormous pressure from the bosses to accept cut backs in wages and other working conditions as capitalism lurches from one crisis to the next.

The clothing industry has been particularly hard hit by the effects of the new world order and the stand you have taken will serve as a rallying point for workers locally and internationally. The threat by the bosses to lock-out workers is also condemned. It is vitally important that we meet this challenge with all our resources and should not allow ourselves to be intimidated by these bullying tactics.

We wish to conclude with a quote by Friedrich Engels, which is as pertinent now as when it was written in 1844:

"If trade unionists failed to register their protest by striking, their silence would be regarded as an admission that they acquiesced in the pre-eminence of economic forces over human welfare. Such acquiescence would be recognition of the right of the middle class to exploit workers when business was flourishing and to let the workers go hungry when business was slack".

Aluta Continua Forward to Socialism

Yours in the struggle for a living wage

Signed by: Roger Ronnie General Secretary
