CWIU PLEDGES FULL SUPPORT FOR SACTWU

Issued by: Congress of South African Trade Unions

General Secretary SACTWU

24/07/96

Comrades,

With your national strike about to begin, CWIU pledges its full support for the action of clothing workers who are attempting to advance their lowly living standards and to rid the industry of discriminatory practices.

We all know that workers in this industry are amongst some of the lowest paid workers in South Africa. Despite their skills, they have continued to receive poverty wages. With more mouths to feed as unemployment grows, workers have shown the greatest restraint in their very reasonable demand of a 10% increase - an increase that the industry can afford to pay.

Employers have adopted an aggressive and unreasonable position. By stating their intention to lock out workers, they are escalating the conflict. They are also confirming COSATU's position that the LOCK OUT should form no part of the industrial relations system.

GWIU condemns the approach of the employers and fully supports SACTWU in its brave fight against super exploitation and the abuse of power by employers.

The CWIU NEC held over the next three days will be discussing what practical solidarity action GWIU and its members can take.

Forward to Victory! A living wage is the right of all workers!

Muzi Buthelezi General Secretary
