Mandela Memorial at Cape Town Stadium

10 December 2013

To: City of Cape Town

Att: The Mayor

Re: Mandela Memorial at Cape Town Stadium

Dear Madam Mayor

Please receive correspondence from our offices in respect of the Mandela event to be held on the Wednesday 11 December 2013, at the Cape Town Stadium.

We absolutely support the event and want to work with your good offices to make it an amazing success and an event that brings together all the people of Cape Town. We will support any initiative that gives expression to the values of Madiba, that would not exclude anyone. We are absolutely committed to ensuring that we honour the real legacy that Mandela left us, of inclusivity and equality.

We accordingly bring to your attention a real concern emerging amongst working families of the Cape Flats. The distribution of the tickets by Shoprite has not ensured a fair distribution, in relation to how the Shoprite stores are distributed amongst the different areas, with previously white areas having greater access. We have too many reports of poor areas not being able to get coupons, as there are no Computickets in working class areas, which is a real problem. We reluctantly raise this matter, as it may spoil the atmosphere, but we believe we would do an immeasurable disservice to the legacy of Mandela, by not seeking to mitigate the social injury to our poor communities unable to attend.

Accordingly we call on the City Council to put in place extra outside TV screens at the stadium, as well as in the Green Point Gardens for the overflow of people that we expect to attend. As Cosatu we are going to call on workers and working families to come to the stadium precinct, even if they do not have coupons .

The greatest gift we can give Mandela in his passing, is to ensure his commitment to equality and justice is applied in every circumstance of our Country in future, and that starts with his Memorial Service. We trust that your good offices will make the arrangements as we have made the call to our working class communities and we have also arranged free trains, even if people do not have coupons.

We urge you to follow our call and to make this a moment where we put this City on a new trajectory of uniting all of our people in action and in words. We would not like a situation where because of a lack of planning, we canít accommodate peopleís ambition to share the moment in Town.

Yours faithfully
