COSATU condemns police brutality

8 November 2000

COSATU Communications Department - 2000-11-08

COSATU would like to express its outrage at the horrible and shocking activities of the South African Police members against defenceless alleged illegal immigrants, shown on Special Assignment last night.

We condemn the cruel, inhuman and racist attitude of these police members applied in their operations, something that completely contradicts the country’s current democratic dispensation. This kind of behaviour is highly unacceptable, especially when it comes from members of the sector that is supposed to be protecting the public.

COSATU is calling for the immediate expulsion and prosecution of those members involved and the head of that particular unit and also an immediate investigation into the unit. We see this as a reoccurrence of apartheid police methods and they should be uprooted completely

We as COSATU cannot accept a situation whereby members of the public, irrespective of their suspected nationality, feel unsafe in this country because of the cruel and illegitimate policing methods. We would however, like to praise the Safety and Security minister, Steve Tshwete, and the Police commissioner, Jackie Selebi, for taking this matter seriously, as well as the SABC for exposing these inhumane activities.
