Free Mario Masuku NOW

12 December 2014

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is deeply concerned at the rapidly deteriorating health of Comrade Mario Masuku, the President of the Swaziland democracy movement PUDEMO, who has been jailed since 1 May 2014 on trumped-up charges.

COSATU demands his immediate release by the Swaziland authorities so that he can receive the urgent medical attention he needs. We urge anyone who can to visit him in jail to do so, and insist that the authorities stop barring visitors as they have been doing.

The federation also urges all democrats in Swaziland, South African and around the world to step up the campaign for Comrade Mario’s immediate, unconditional release, not only on humanitarian grounds because of his failing health, but because he is a political prisoner. His only ‘crime’ is to fight for human rights and democracy and an end to Africa’s last absolute monarchy and its biased judicial system which always delvers judgements in line with the government’s wishes.

We send our best wishes to Comrade Mario and to his family who share his suffering; his daughter has been directly affected by her father’s inability to pay for her university education because of his exorbitant legal fees.
